Khabib vs Ferguson Fight cancelled
Khabib hospitalized hours before UFC 209 weigh-ins
Live early weigh ins a woman who works for UFC came in and announced the fight is cancelled. Khabib was released from hospital but not cleared to fight.
There is major concern right now regarding the UFC interim lightweight title fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson. Russian media outlet Izvestia reportedthat Khabib was hospitalized just hours before the official weigh-ins for UFC 209 (which are underway as of this writing, and will end at 2 PM ET). As Bloody Elbow’s Karim Zidan noted on Twitter
“Yes, Khabib was taken to hospital,” Abdulmanap said to Izvestia, “but it happened before weigh-ins by three hours so he may be okay.”
The previous two times the UFC booked Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson, the fight had to be cancelled. Khabib had pulled out with a rib injury ahead of their December 2015 matchup, then Ferguson withdrew from their UFC on FOX main event last April after his doctor confirmed that he had fluid and blood in his lung.
Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Tony Ferguson cancelled due to Khabib medical issue:
UFC 209’s co-main event is officially off, as Khabib Nurmagomedov has been forced out of the fight.
Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson is officially off. The co-main event at Saturday night’s UFC 209 appeared to be in jeopardy earlier today when reports surfaced that Nurmagomedov had been hospitalized. The fight has now been officially cancelled, with the UFC just releasing the following statement:
UFC lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov was transported to Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center Thursday evening due to weight management medical issues. He was treated and has been discharged, UFC officials confirmed.
The scheduled interim lightweight championship bout between Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson at UFC 209 has been cancelled on the doctor’s recommendation.
As stated, Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson was to be for the UFC Interim Lighweight title, and was scheduled as the UFC 209 co-main event. No word yet on what fight will be bumped from the prelims to the main card to replace this.
This is the third time this fight has been scheduled and subsequently called off. Once was due to a Khabib rib injury in December 2015, and that was followed by Ferguson pulling out in April due to lung issues.
Stay tuned for more updates on what this cancellation means for UFC 209, plus more details on Nurmagomedov’s situation as they become available.
UFC 209 is scheduled for this Saturday, March 4 and is headlined by Tyron Woodley vs. Stephen Thompson 2 for the UFC Welterweight title. We will have full coverage of the event here at Bloody Elbow.
